GROWING GUIDE

Sow at any time of the year except early to mid summer as too much heat may lead to spindly plants.

  • Soak seeds for several hours until they start to swell.
  • Sow 10mm deep in a moist, well-drained, seed compost in pots or trays.
  • Seal in a polythene bag or place in a propagator and maintain at 18-21C.
  • Germination can be slow and erratic.
  • As the seedlings emerge, gradually increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.

If not all the seeds have germinated after 5-6 weeks, a cold spell below 5C in a fridge or outdoors may help.  Remove and pot up any seedlings first then place in the cold for 4-5 weeks.  After this bring back into the warmth & the remaining seeds should germinate.

  • Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 9cm pots.
  • Grow on in slightly cooler conditions with plenty of light, but shaded from direct sun.
  • When established, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions by placing plants outside during the day for 2 weeks before planting out in the garden.
