Dierama Slieve Donard Hybrids (Angel's Fishing Rod) seeds

Originating in South Africa, Dierama is a graceful perennial with arching stems of bell shaped flowers rising from neat clumps of grass like foliage.  They look particularly good planted among low growing grasses and near ponds or water features.  Slieve Donard Hybrids is a lovely blend of pink, purple and lavender flowers with a later than average flowering period of August to October bringing a welcome burst of colour to the late summer garden.

GROWING GUIDE

Sow at any time of the year except mid-summer as too much heat may produce spindly plants.

• Sow well spaced on the surface of a moist, well drained seed compost in pots or trays.
• Seal inside a polythene bag or place in a propagator and maintain a temperature of 15-20C.
• Germination should begin after 30 days, though some stubborn seeds may take many months.
• Keep checking to make sure the compost does not dry out – it should be slightly moist.

• As the seedlings emerge, increase ventilation by opening the bag or propagator vents.
• Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 9cm pots.
• Grow on in cooler conditions with plenty of light, but shaded from direct sun.
• When established, in mid spring gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions by placing plants outside during the day for 2 weeks before planting out.
