Houseleeks are evergreen succulents forming neat rosettes of fleshy leaves in a wide range of forms and colours. They will slowly expand to form a dense carpet producing new rosettes every year. In summer, tall flower stems rise up topped with clusters of white, yellow or pale pink flowers. Very easy to look after, extremely drought tolerant and hardy. Perfect for rockeries, gravel gardens, containers and can even be planted in wall crevices.

GROWING GUIDE

Sowing Instructions:  Sow at any time of year.

Sow seeds thinly onto the surface of a moist, free-draining seed compost mixed 50/50 with vermiculite or perlite.  Seal in a polythene bag or place in a propagator and maintain at 18-20C.  Germination can be erratic and usually begins after about 15 days and can take up to 2 months. Keep the compost just moist at all times.

Growing Instructions:  When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot up individually into 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions, preferably around 15C.  Maintain plants in pots and over winter in a well-ventilated, cool frost-free place as necessary. In spring, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions before planting out 20cm apart in a sunny position with good drainage.  Mixing the planting compost or garden soil with horticultural grit or fine gravel will aid drainage and prevent the plants from rotting over winter.
